Things to do in Flagstaff, Arizona
Arizona temperatures in the summer can reach over 118 degrees.. which is to hot for me. We drive the 1.5 hours up north on I-17 to Flagstaff, AZ. We love the drive, turning the corner seeing the landscape change; pine trees appear, and temperatures drop…. stresses of the week disappear as we drive up the hill.
This beautiful historic city is home to Nothern Arizona University Lumberjacks and has a minimum of 20 degrees difference from Phoenix. Tour the NAU Campus and discover history: opening doors in 1899….for the girl power gang: the first graduating class consisted of 4 women in 1901.
Driving up US-180; a beautiful 18- 20-minute drive from the University is Arizona Snowbowl. Past the beautiful Aspen trees, park at the bottom… about a 5-minute walk to the Agassiz Lodge restaurant… they are dog-friendly, yeah for George (seen above) is enjoying the weather or waiting to see if Wally drops anything.
Ride the Ski lift to the top, seen in the photos at 11,500 feet, a perfect photo opportunity. Check website for deals on lift tickets.
One of our favorite restaurants in downtown Flagstaff is on the corner of Leroux Street…the Historic Weatherford Hotel. The rooftop bar makes for excellent people watching.
Heritage Square each Saturday night is family movie night. Bring chairs: they sell popcorn and hot dogs. I love the small town feel.
Having lived in the Flagstaff area: evenings cool off, making it pleasant to sit outside. Monsoons start around fourth of July… around 3:00 pm every day like clockwork. The magical sounds of thunder and lighting are a welcome change from the heat of Phoenix.
